About Cheltenham Wing Chun Kuen (CWCK)
Over the years Sifu's Steve Woodward and David Akroyd-Jones have gained and extensive knowledge of the Martial Arts and specifically of Yip Man Wing Chun. They have each been training and teaching Wing Chun in and around the Gloucestershire area since 1982 and 1983 respectively. It was the love of Wing Chun and a desire to pass on the benefits of this Chinese Martial Art that led to the creation of Cheltenham Wing Chun Kuen (CWCK) which was officially launched in 1994 when both Sifu's Steve and Dave qualified as instructors for Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe, a senior student of Yip Mans son, Yip Chun.
Since that time Sifu's Steve Woodward and David Akroyd-Jones have been representing Sifu Rawcliffe and his Association in the Gloucestershire area providing a family-like environment that allows students direct access to senior instructors. Over the years Sifu's Steve and Dave have instructed many students in the art of Wing Chun some of which have gone on to teach in their own right at their own schools. One of the main aims of CWCK is to propagate Wing Chun around the country and build on the excellence in instruction, incepted by Birmingham Wing Chun Kuen, and inspired by its Director Master Yip Chun.

Starting your Wing Chun training with CWCK
Wing Chun unstruction is best achieved in regular training sessions where students can learn from thier peer group and qualified instructors. Wing Chun is designed as a street self defence system and as such students need a variety of training partners to enable them to build confidence in dealing with different opponents. A students ability to defend himself/herself should not be based on their opponents physical attributes due to the fact that, as a rule, it is not possible for a victim to choose their attacker. Surely if they could the choice would be, not to be attacked in the first place.
There are many books and videos available on the Internet that propose to teach Wing Chun and although they act as a very good reference they can not be a substitute for training with a variety of real people. An integral part of the Wing Chun system is sensitivity and this you cannot get from any media. You may also become confused as there can be subtle differences in the way that teachers perform their Wing Chun and in the way that the photographers photograph it.
At Cheltenham Wing Chun Kuen we believe there is only one way to appreciate the intricacies of Wing Chun and that is to attend one of our classes.
